Samyang Announces the Launch of new AF 24mm F1.8 FE
with Optimised Features for Astrophotography

April 9th, 2021, Seoul, South Korea – Korean optical manufacturer Samyang Co., Ltd., today announced the latest addition to their Tiny Series lens line-up with the introduction of a new AF 24mm F1.8 FE large-aperture wide-angle prime lens, for Sony full-frame E mount cameras. The lens is tiny and lightweight to suit the smaller compact system cameras.

Samyang Expands the Tiny but F1.8 Series Line-up

The Samyang 24mm F1.8 FE weighs only 230g/8oz, measures 71mm/2.79 in length and uses 11 elements in 8 groups (7 special lenses – 2 ASP, 3 HR, 2 ED). It has a 9-bladed iris, 58mm filter thread and a close focus distance of just 0.19m/0.62ft.

Ideal Autofocus Wide-angle Prime Lens for Astrophotography
The AF 24mm F1.8 FE lens features a new function titled “Astro-Focus Mode” with an “LED index” for astrophotography. The “Astro-Focus Mode” can be operated through the newly-designed Focus Hold button. This function allows you to move the focus directly to infinity, by clicking the button when entering the Astro-Focus Mode. Since the factory default value may differ slightly, depending on each camera body, this is a convenient function that allows you to save and use the precise infinity focus value, according to your specific camera body. If the focus value set through the LED index does not match, it will be shown with a red LED. If you then click the button, your focus value will automatically adjust to the saved value, changing the LED to green.

Considering the astrophotography environment, this is an extremely useful function for those who need to spend long periods in dark environments.

AF 24mm F1.8 FE Features

Compact, with Superb Resolution
Samyang’s latest optical technology allows this large aperture wide-angle prime lens to achieve stunning corner-to-corner resolution, even at its maximum F1.8 setting. A total of 11 elements in 8 groups, with 7 special lenses (2 ASP, 3 HR, 2 ED) allow you to express your infinite creativity; especially suitable for astrophotography as it delivers awesome images with minimised spherical aberration and coma.

Shallow Depth of Field with Large Aperture F1.8

The AF 24mm F1.8 FE has a fast F1.8 aperture for crisp focus and beautifully blurred backgrounds. It gives you full control over depth-of-field so that you can isolate your subject from the background. The 9-blade circular aperture contributes smooth, creamy, natural-looking bokeh.

Versatile Lens for Landscapes, astrophotography and even snapshots
The 24mm F1.8 FE lens provides a wide-angle of view of 83.7˚ and a short minimum focusing distance of 0.19m (0.62ft). This allows you to take photos in multiple environments, whether indoors or outdoors. Combined with this wide-angle persona, you can freely create your own perspective with ease and creativity.

Compact & Lightweight with Modern Design
The AF 24mm F1.8 FE weighs only 230g (8.1oz) and is just 71.5mm (2.8in) in length. This small size and lightweight enhances mobility when used with compact E-mount mirrorless cameras. The matt finish, with laser-engraved font provides better readability and the tactile mounting index adds to the user convenience. Also featured is weather sealing in 5 locations, to protect from dust, light rain and snow and provide the ability to capture stunning images in less than perfect conditions.

Advanced Fast and Quiet Auto Focus for stills and movies
Autofocus is now expected to capture images accurately and quickly, but it also needs to be quiet and smooth. The AF 24mm F1.8 FE features the latest STM (Stepping Motor), this allows a larger and heavier focus lens group to be controlled more quietly and precisely, providing superb image quality in both photos and videos.

Maximising Usability with New Features
Customisable Focus-Hold Button
Pressing and holding this button will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The user can also assign other desired functions to the focus hold button through the menu setting on the camera body.

Custom Switch
Equipped with Samyang's Custom Switch, shooting and operation is more intuitive and simple. You can easily various functions such as Aperture Control Mode or MF Mode from the Switch and enjoy the shooting mode that suits your personal preference. More functions will be added through firmware updates in the future.

Astro-Focus Mode – NEW function for Astrophotography
When a user enters the Astro-Focus Mode, the LED index will blink red once and the focus will automatically move to the infinity position (Factory default setting value). Users can save their own/desired focus position/value with the focus hold button.

Samyang’s Guide to Achieving the Optimal Angle of View

The perfect spacing and distance are always necessary when shooting all kinds of subjects, including people, to give them a proper relationship with the beautiful space around them. So, what’s the exact distance that helps you best appreciate a work of art, or a photo?

The correct answer is the diagonal length of the full frame of a subject.

표준화각 자료 이미지
표준화각 자료 이미지

The best standpoint from which to appreciate the full view of a subject is the distance of the diagonal length of the subject frame. This wider angle is superior to standing closer at a 50 degree angle to get a more detailed view. This notion of an ideal distance or view point is also applicable in the world of photography.

For still images, keeping a distance equal to the diagonal length of the full image surface is recommended. The full frame sensor of a digital camera is 36 x 24mm and the diagonal length is 43.26mm so any distance close to this number is nearer to the ideal than the currently accepted industry standard of 50mm.

Back when film cameras were common, 45mm was the industry standard and this continued as reflex cameras needed extra space to fit a mirror. However, as mirrorless cameras become more popular again, there has been a need to return to this industry standard…which is the impetus for the Samyang AF 45mm F1.8 FE. With less distortion than a 35mm lens and wider angles than a 55mm lens, the Samyang AF 45mm F1.8 FE is a perfect lens for portraits, landscapes, architecture photography, and pictures of pets.

What is Preset Aperture Control Function?

On the Preset Aperture Control function, the aperture blade operates smoothly like a "De-clicked lens", which is advantageous for video recording.
Fujifilm cameras are engineered to control the aperture according to the minimum exposure value(F-stop), so when the camera controls the aperture, it blinks momentarily to set the proper exposure.

AF 75mm F1.8 X intentionally disconnects the communication with the camera body and the lens itself on the Preset Aperture Control function, so it is possible to smoothly adjust the exposure without flickering. ISO and shutter speed are adjusted according to the changed exposure by controlling the aperture, so the exposure value can be changed even with the 1/2 F-stop.

[What is Dolly Shot? How to shoot easily]

[What is Dolly shot?]

A dolly shot, also referred to as a tracking shot or trucking shot, is a camera movement technique used by cinematographers to track and follow a subject in motion. To achieve this, the camera is mounted on a device called a "dolly," which facilitates smooth tracking movement. The dolly can move in front of, behind, or alongside the subject, which can be a person, a location, a product, or any other object of focus in the frame. Through this, you can control the emotional distance between the subject and the viewer by highlighting the audiovisual and dramatic effects.

[How to take a Dolly Shot simply by handheld]

Tip. If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake, so please shoot at a focal length between 35 and 100mm.
1. Stand at a distance of about 1.5 to 2 meters away from the subject.
2. Set the custom switch to MF and Mode 3 and adjust the focal length to about 100mm.
3. After focusing on the subject, set the aperture to F8~16.
4. Slowly turn the zoom ring to the left (towards the wide-angle end) while using your upper body and arms to move the camera toward your subject.
5. Dolly Shot complete!
※ When shooting from a farther distance from the subject, use a cart or gimbal for more stable shooting.
